Charles became Britain’s monarch last month following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The queen died Sept. 8 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Officials later said she died of old age.

In his first address as king, Charles vowed to continue his mother’s “lifelong service.”

“I pay tribute to my mother’s memory,” he said. “I know that her death brings great sadness to so many of you, and I share that sense of loss beyond measure with you all.”

With 72 years on the throne, Elizabeth was the longest-serving monarch in British history.
