Man arrested after 9-year-old boy accidentally shoots, kills 18-year-old in Kansas, police say
WICHITA, Kan. – An 18-year-old man is dead after police said a 9-year-old boy accidentally shot him in a Kansas home.
According to KAKE and The Associated Press, the incident occurred about 4 p.m. Tuesday at the home on South Sycamore Avenue in Wichita. Police said the child picked up a loaded gun and accidentally fired it at Jeremy Retana, fatally striking him in the head.
Wichita police said investigators later learned that Christian Enrique Concha, 21, had shown the loaded gun to the boy and a 10-year-old who also was in the home, the news outlets reported. Concha also let them hold the weapon, authorities said.
Concha and the children’s babysitter later went to a gas station without the children, who stayed in the home with Retana, KAKE reported. The weapon was left unattended, police said.
Authorities arrested Concha on first-degree murder, domestic violence battery and aggravated child endangerment charges, according to the AP.
