ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A Florida jogger made a gruesome discovery Tuesday morning, prompting a police investigation.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the unidentified jogger found a decomposing human head around 7 a.m. in a grassy area just west of an interstate overpass, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

“We are asking the public if they saw anything suspicious, to let us know,” St. Petersburg Police Public Information Officer Yolanda Fernandez told CNN by phone. “We’ve had a few tips come in, and we’re tracking them down.”

Due to the level of decomposition, investigators have not yet been able to determine the gender, age or race of the remains, Fernandez said.

“A lot of people might have thought it was just an animal, but (the jogger) perceived it really did look like a human,” she told the Times.

According to CNN, no video surveillance of the area exists, and Fernandez said investigators do not believe the person died at the location.

“There’s no active crime scene,” she said.

The jogger told police the head was not there when she passed by the area Sunday, but she did not jog through the area on Monday, the Times reported.
