A Jacksonville police officer’s dog was found Friday morning after it disappeared during a burglary at the officer’s home early this week.

A group of people gathered Friday morning to search for the dog, Hemingway. The dog was found alive about an hour after the search, about a mile away from his home.

Hemingway appears to have been shot near the nose. His owner, Paul Shaw, said it looks to be a through-and-through wound, causing the dog to miss some of his teeth, but the dog is expected to be OK. Affiliated Veterinary Specialist told Action News Jax that it will provide free medical care for Hemingway.

Hemingway was reported missing after the officer’s house was broken into on Tuesday. The officer’s truck, two guns and keys to a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office patrol car were stolen during the break-in.

A police chase ensued and officers say the driver hit a police cruiser then crashed into a power pole, splitting it in half. No injuries were reported.

The stolen truck was recovered Tuesday night. JSO arrested 14-year-old Patrick Bell in connection with the burglary. Police are still searching for another suspect who fled from the scene on foot.
