GALESBURG, Ill. – An Illinois man is accused of a hate crime after police said he attacked a black couple in Galesburg on Saturday night.

Brian McLaren, 48, of Galesburg, was charged with a felony hate crime, KWQC reported.

According to police, McLaren approached the couple around 11 p.m., yelled racial slurs and threw trash cans at them, WQAD reported.

Officers arriving at the scene said they saw a person, later identified as McLaren, taking a swing at the man, KWQC reported.

Police said McLaren continued to utter racial slurs after his arrest, WQAD reported. Police said the comments were recorded on video.
