Fire erupts at Beirut port a month after explosion
BEIRUT – A fire erupted at Lebanon’s Port of Beirut on Thursday, more than a month after an explosion there killed more than 190 people, multiple news outlets are reporting.
According to The Associated Press, the blaze broke out midday Thursday at a warehouse where tires are placed, state news reported. Authorities have not yet said what caused the fire, which came two days after a smaller blaze occurred at the port, the AP reported.
The Lebanese army has closed off the area of the fire and sent helicopters to help fight the blaze, according to the AP. Companies in the area also have asked their employees to leave, the news agency reported.
On Aug. 4, a massive explosion at the port sparked by 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate killed at least 190 people and injured 6,500 others, according to the AP. Thousands of buildings also were damaged in the blast, officials said.
