It was just a little bit over a year ago when our friend, Jake Owen, was in town to perform at the Fraze Pavilion for the K99.1FM 30th birthday party. Now, Jake is set to make his acting debut at the end of the month in the upcoming movie, Our Friend, starring Dakota Johnson, Casey Affleck and Jason Segel.

I’ve always been intrigued by challenging myself to do things that I’m not necessarily comfortable with,” Owen told PEOPLE. “No one hired me for this because they saw me act in a film before,” he adds. “I think they’re putting faith in me that I can do this, and that gives me some energy.”

Our Friend premieres in select theaters and on demand January 22.
