Pam Burnett was driving to work at about 10:45 p.m. on Dec. 23 when she heard a loud crash.

“I started freaking out,” Burnett told KTVU. “I couldn’t see. Something hit me in the face. I thought my brain was bleeding.”

Burnett, a labor and delivery nurse, was able to pull over and call 911 using Siri, KPIX reported.

Police said they found a rock the “size of a grapefruit” in Burnett’s car, according to KTVU. Authorities believe the rock was thrown from an overpass onto Burnett’s car, the television station reported.

When Burnett finally got to the hospital, doctors discovered she had multiple broken bones and a damaged right eye, KGO reported. She has already had three surgeries, including one that lasted six hours on Christmas Day, according to KPIX.

”There’s a good possibility that I could lose my right eye,” Burnett told KGO.

According to the California Highway Patrol, several similar incidents where objects were thrown have occurred in the area, KTVU reported. One woman was killed in a similar incident in April when a rock smashed her windshield, KFSN reported.

“There was not an emergency on the road I had to swerve out of the way for,” Burnett told KTVU. “There was nothing. This was all senseless and without purpose.”

Burnett has started a GoFundMe page to help defray medical costs. Pledged donations have already topped $65,000.
