TAMPA, Fla. – Former NFL wide receiver Reche Caldwell was killed in a shooting outside of his Florida home Saturday night.

Investigators said Caldwell, 41, was ambushed and shot around 11 p.m. in a possible attempted robbery, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

“He was set up,” his mother, Deborah Caldwell, told the Times. “I’m going to follow it all the way to the end. … You get killed right here in your hometown? You made a statement here, and y’all just took it away from us?”

Caldwell played baseball and football at a Tampa high school before attending the University of Florida where he played wide receiver.

Caldwell was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 2002. He spent six seasons in the league playing for the Chargers, the Washington Washington Football Team and the New England Patriots.
