Boston Marathon Bombing: Supreme Court could reinstate death sentence for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev
The Supreme Court could reinstate the death penalty against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the man who was found guilty of the Boston Marathon bombing.
The justices announced Monday that they will hear an appeal filed by former President Donald Trump’s administration, The Associated Press reported.
The administration had carried out 13 federal inmate executions in its last six months in office.
The case will not be heard until the fall and President Joe Biden has been opposed to the federal death penalty, going so far as to pledge to abolish the practice, the AP reported.
But the prosecution and decision on asking for the death sentence for Tsarnaev were sought by former President Barack Obama’s administration while Biden served as vice president.
Tsarnaev was convicted of the 2013 terror attack that killed three people. He was sentenced to death in 2015, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit threw out the sentence last year, saying that the trial judge did not ensure a fair jury after constant media coverage of the bombing, USA Today reported.
