The video, posted to Twitter by Moshe Schwartz, shows a woman on the ground near a white car, attempting to hit a man standing over her with a cane. When the person filming approaches the driver, the driver takes off, hitting the person filming with the vehicle.

In an email, detectives with the New York City Police Department said that the 78-year-old woman had been in the back seat of the vehicle and was involved in a dispute with the driver over where to be dropped off. Police said the driver pulled the woman out of the car by her leg.

Police said both the good Samaritan and the woman were taken to the hospital.

WNBC spoke with the woman’s daughter, who said that her mother was traumatized by the experience and is recovering from lower back injuries.

The car in question had a license plate from New York’s Taxi and Limousine Commission, which oversees hired cars. In a statement to WABC, a spokesperson said, “TLC is aware of the incident and is working with the NYPD on their investigation.”

“The video is brutal and shows no compassion or respect for the elderly,” Fernando Mateo, president of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, told WNBC. “There is nothing that can justify throwing an elderly woman out of a car and into the street. The NYSFTD will never support or condone this type of behavior and will seek punishment for any driver that engages in physical attacks unless it is self-defense and the driver’s life is in danger.”

The driver has not been identified, and police did not say whether charges would be filed.
