Deputies said the mother, who was not identified, took her three children, aged 5, 3 and 1, to day care Thursday morning. She left only the older two children at the facility, KPRC reported.

Deputies said the woman returned to her home, and at one point left the house to exercise.

When she eventually went to pick up the children from the day care, she realized she had forgotten to drop off the 1-year-old.

A worker from the day care went to the home with the mother to look for the child, who was found in the back of the car, KTRK reported. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies said the girl had been in the car from around 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., KPRC reported.

The mother has been held for questioning but it will be up to the District Attorney to decide if charges will be filed or if a grand jury will be called, KTRK reported.
