Ch-ch-ch-trash: Bags of chia seeds wash up on Oregon beaches
FLORENCE, Ore. – At least four bulging bags of chia seeds have been removed after they were found washed up along the Oregon shore.
The battered remains of a shipping container discovered Tuesday on the beach in Florence is believed to have once contained the nontoxic seeds that expand once immersed in water, Oregon State Parks said on social media.
“The bags were too heavy to move by hand,” ranger Jason Hennessey told KCBY. “We had to cut them up to remove them, or use equipment to haul them out.”
The agency is investigating the source of the seeds.
Officials warned the public to email beach.debris@oregon.gov if they find additional bags or debris.
