Anthony Douglas Shoffner Jr., 27, is accused of stabbing his mother, 46-year-old Rebecca Griffin, and his stepfather, 42-year-old Kenneth Griffin, to death on March 10, 2020, WSB-TV reported. He was living with the couple at the time of their deaths, according to the news station.

It was not clear why the items were left on the 42-year-old. Shoffner’s trial abruptly ended Wednesday after prosecutors failed to redact information on a prior conviction from a video aired in court, according to the Telegraph.

He is expected to be retried, WSB reported.

Shoffner previously served as a corrections officer in Georgia from 2014 to 2016, according to The Associated Press. He was fired from the Department of Corrections on Feb. 11, 2016, and subsequently pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge after being implicated in a methamphetamine ring involving inmates, the AP and the Telegraph reported.

Shoffner was sentenced to 28 months in a federal prison, according to the Telegraph. He was released in 2019, the newspaper reported.
