Kavon Howard, 44, of Richmond, was killed in the shooting, the Times-Dispatch reported. Neighbors told the newspaper that the child was his; the baby had gunshot wounds that were considered not to be life-threatening, WWBT-TV reported.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at the Mallard Green Townhomes in Richmond shortly after 1 a.m. EST, according to the Times-Dispatch.

Officers arrived and discovered Howard with a gunshot wound, the newspaper reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“I could see the light flashing. They must’ve went in his house or something, and I could see the light flashing from my window,” a next-door neighbor, who preferred to be identified by her first name of Chocolate, told WWBT. “My daughter told my husband and I to get down on the floor ‘cause she was downstairs with the grandchildren. And she said, ‘Ma! Dad! Get on the floor,’ and we heard them bullets. I didn’t know where it came from because I thought it was the alley.”

“We were sleeping real good until we heard the gunshots and my son said, ‘Oh Lord, this don’t make no sense,’” another neighbor, Mildred Kenney, told WRIC-TV. “It’s time to put away guns, we got kids out here.”

Police do not have any information about a potential suspect or a motive for the shooting, WWBT reported.
