WATERVILLE, Maine – A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was shot when a sibling found a gun in their Maine home, authorities said.

According to WMTW and WCSH, the incident occurred shortly before noon Saturday at a Waterville home. Police responded to the house and found a toddler who had been shot in the head, the news outlets reported. Crews rushed the boy to a nearby hospital and transferred him to Portland’s Maine Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition, authorities said.

Investigators later learned that one of the toddler’s siblings had discovered the gun inside a “secured closet” in the home, according to WCSH. The sibling loaded the weapon, which fired, striking the boy, authorities said.

Waterville police and Maine State Police continue to investigate the case, WMTW reported.
