For some, nothing is better than a day at the lake. But one 12-year-old is $15,000 richer for time he spent fishing.
Finnan Murphy hooked a 26-pound, 10-ounce Chinook salmon Sunday.
That fish netted him $15,000 as the grand prize winner of the Spring Lake Ontario Counties Derby in upstate New York, WHAM reported.
It took him about half an hour to reel in the fish once it was hooked.

“I thought I’d lost the fish two times when it stopped fighting. And then it would take off again,” Finnan told NewYorkUpstate.com. “I’d reel and it just kept pulling line out. When I got it close to the boat, it dove and was pulling even more.”
Finnan was there and his two friends and their dads, the website reported.
Finnan has plans for his windfall. Most of it is going to college, but he’s getting some gifts for his parents and an Orbi Nerf gun and maybe a new fishing pole for himself.
