ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. – Volunteers working to remove litter throughout a North Carolina community over the weekend discovered 10 dead dogs, mostly pit bulls, wrapped in trash bags and thrown into a ditch along the side of the road.
The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
Despite the gruesome discovery, the cleanup Saturday was considered a success. Volunteers collected 1,545 large bags of trash. They also found 200 tires, several appliances, including refrigerators and stoves, and a 65-inch television still in the box.
“It was such a blessing to see so many people come together as one and clean up as much of the county as we could in a four-hour span,” Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said on social media. “It was truly an unbelievable experience. I wish I could thank each of you personally and could have visited each site. But today, I wanted to get my hands dirty as well and chip in where I could.”
