According to KYTV and KTVI, the Texas County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred Monday evening on Nagle Drive in Elk Creek. The victim was playing outside with a younger sibling, who discovered a rifle in a parked car, officials said. The gun then discharged, striking and killing the older child, the news outlets reported.

“There is nothing more tragic than the loss of a child,” Sheriff Scott Lindsey told KTVI, adding that parents should “examine hazards, such as storage of firearms or any other dangerous items that children might have access to.”

The incident remains under investigation, authorities said.
