DETROIT – Two men may have been arguing about a stimulus check issued as part of the federal government’s COVID-19 relief package before one shot the other Tuesday in Detroit, authorities said.

According to WJBK and WDIV, Detroit police said the incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. at a Rutherford Street home. Investigators, citing preliminary information gathered from the scene, said two men, ages 53 and 31, appeared to be arguing about the stimulus check when the younger man retrieved a gun and shot the older man, the news outlets reported.

The victim was hospitalized in “temporary serious condition,” and the 31-year-old is in police custody, WJBK reported.

Police have not released the men’s names or said how they knew each other, according to WJBK.

The news came just days after an Indiana man shot the mother of his child and killed four of her family members following a domestic dispute over a stimulus check, a family member and a neighbor told WXIN and WISH.
