Glitz, glamour and Thor’s hammer: Pieces of Hollywood history up for sale
LOS ANGELES – More than 1,400 items, which include some of the most iconic objects in Hollywood, will hit the auction block for a collaboration between Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies.
“Hollywood Legends” will take place July 15-17 in Beverly Hills and on the Julien’s Auctions website. Items that will be available include Captain America’s shield from “Captain America: The First Avenger,” a two-piece Givenchy ensemble worn by Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and one of the six original Stormtrooper helmets from “Star Wars: A New Hope,” The Associated Press reported.

Also included in the auction will be the costumes Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell wore in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” the “Mjölnir” Hammer from “Thor: The Dark World” and a collection of props used on-screen in the Harry Potter movies, including a “Nimbus 2001″ broomstick used by Draco Malfoy in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”
The auction will also feature some never-before-seen items from some celebrity estates, including scripts marked by editor Anne V. Coates for “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Out of Sight” and “The Elephant Man,” the AP reported.
Kim Kardashian’s appearance at the Met Gala wearing a Marilyn Monroe dress has the event’s organizers suggesting that there may be heightened interest in some of items for sale at the auction, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A gown Monroe wore in the 1954 movie “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” as well as costume jewelry and personal items from Monroe’s wardrobe, will all be part of the auction.

One of the largest pieces available is a yacht: the original 105-foot “Sobra Las Olas” from the 1957 movie “Pal Joey,” starring Frank Sinatra. The ship currently has its original first-generation diesel engine, according to the auction house.
The public exhibition of the items begins July 11 at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills.
A Cartier 18K gold medic link bracelet from the personal collection of James Garner, worn by the actor in the heartbreaking final scene of The Notebook(New Line Cinema, 2004) and in many other projects and venues. Garner also wears the bracelet as "Jim Rockford" in the series of made for TVThe Rockford Filesmovies (MGB Productions, 1994-99) and as "Shep Walker" inThe Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood(All Girl Productions, 2002). He was photographed wearing the bracelet while accepting the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, at the Rose Bowl and the Oklahoma Centennial Parades in 2007, and elsewhere. The bracelet centers upon a gold plaque, with enameled medic detail, inscribed, To Gigi with Love, the verso, From J.G. and L.G. 01-04-09, to the rectangular link bracelet, with French assay mark and makers mark After he suffered a stroke in 2008, Garner gave the bracelet to his daughter Gigi and inscribed it. "L.G." are the initials of his wife, Lois.
An original hero prop "Nimbus 2001" broomstick that was film-used by Tom Felton in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Warner Bros. Pictures, 2002). This particular prop was used by Tom Felton’s character, Draco Malfoy, while he was a player on the Slytherin Quidditch team. The broomstick is composed of a metal tubular frame, adjustable metal footrests and long resin tubes that imitate broom bristles. The end of the broom handle features the "Nimbus 2001" logo. On various components of the broomstick, there are notes written in black marker indicating "top", "bottom", "large" and "small."
A gold-tone monogram "RUTH" necklace attachment with hoops on each corner for suspension, done using Joseff of Hollywood’s signature Russian plating technique . Worn by Olivia de Havilland in "The Dark Mirror" (Universal, 1946), where de Havilland took on dual roles portraying twins Ruth and Terry Collins. A Lucien Piccard Swiss, automatic, anti-magnetic, "super waterproof," steel-cased watch worn by James Garner as "Jim Rockford" on the hit series The Rockford Files(Roy Huggins-Public Arts Productions, 1974-80). Garner wears the watch in the first episode of the series’ third season, titled "The Fourth Man."
A Golden Globe award presented to James Garner in 1993 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for "Best Performance By An / Actor in a Mini Series / or Motion Picture / Made for Television" for the film "Barbarians at the Gate" (HBO, 1993). The item comes with an envelope from the awards ceremony listing the nominees and announcing the winner.
Original 105’ 1929 Motor Yacht, Sobre Las Olas from 1957 movie Pal Joey, featuring Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak. All of the exterior scenes of the yacht, where Joey (Frank Sinatra) was a kept man by socialite Ms. Wallace Simpson (Rita Hayworth), while located at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco’s Marina District. A lovely example of the gentlemen’s yacht of the 1920’s. Originally launched in 1929 in Wilmington California just prior to the start of the depression. She was originally constructed of port orford cedar with white oak frames. The interior was Honduras Mahogany. Notable ownership by was immediately following 1931 through the end of the . Additionally, Sobre Las Olas was requisitioned by the Navy and was a submarine chaser in San Francisco Harbor. At 9 knots she could successfully outrun any submarine of that era. She currently has her original first generation diesel engines, Atlas Imperial 120 hp engines pushing 42” props.
A Western style costume worn by James Garner on a number of episodes of his long running and popular TV series, Maverick (Warner Bros. Television, 1957-62). Comprising a black wool coat, Warner Bros. label reads in part "5/13/58 / Prod. 9232 / James Garner / Bret Maverick" and another reads in part "5/9/56 / Prod. 9232 / James Garner;" a white cotton dress shirt with ruffles down the front, label reads "Tailored by / J.T. Beach / Los Angeles;" a beige silk vest with a subtle purple and green pattern, Warner Bros. label reads in part "Jim Garner / Bret Maverick" and is twice stamped on the lining "James Garner;" a dark blue silk string tie with a Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors label; and a pair of gray wool trousers, Warner Bros. label reads in part "James Garner / Prod. 9232 / Maverick" and a further stamp on the lining reads "James Garner." Garner wore all these costume parts either together or with other like period pieces throughout the three years he starred on the show as the charming and funny "Bret Maverick." He infamously left the show after three seasons due to a legal dispute, only to go on to a hugely successful film career, as well as continued success on television.

An elegant robe worn by James Garner as "King Marchand" in the Blake Edwards comedy "Victoria Victoria" (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1982). Made of maroon ribbed velvet with brown silk trim on the lapels, cuffs, pockets, and self belt, and lined in rust colored satin; no labels present. This lot includes a DVD of the film.
An original "Mjölnir" hammer prop used by Chris Hemsworth in the filmThor: The Dark World(Marvel Studios, 2013). The prop hammer features a hard resin handle with imitation leather wrap, leather hand strap and a dense foam hammer head. The molded foam head of the hammer is painted to resemble a worn metal surface and features intricate raised designs on either side. The top of the hammer features text around the perimeter presumably written in "Asgardian", based on Norse mythology. The leather hand strap at the end of the handle features a cross stitch detail along the inner edge.
A pair of beige heels by Dal Co., worn by Marilyn Monroe. The heels exhibit no-slip heel inserts, worn heels and soles, and very scuffed toes and sides. The shoes are stamped both "38" and "15." From The Estate of Lee Strasberg.

A nun’s habit rosary and two saint coins, provided by Joseff of Hollywood. The rosary, composed of a series of simulated wood beads spaced by chain, is enhanced by a large gold tone crucifix and medallion, and smaller silver tone saint medal. This piece is a real antique nun’s habit rosary used in a convent, with the rare skull and crossbones design adding to its uniqueness. An original lined script for the classic Steven Soderbergh film “Out of Sight” (Universal Pictures, 1998) by Scott Frank, from the estate of editor Anne V. Coates, who received an Academy Award nomination for her work on the film. The item is accompanied by a one-line (abridged shooting) schedule dated April 30, 1998. The script is dated January 26, 1998 and labeled "COMPLETED SHOOTING SCRIPT/TOTAL TIME 147:36/(NOTE: ABOVE TIMING DOES NOT INCLUDE SECOND UNIT)."
A custom-made pale pink silk blouse worn by Marilyn Monroe as "Amanda Dell" in "Let’s Make Love" (20th Century, 1960). The fitted blouse is tailored with simulated pearl buttons and hand finishing work to the interior. A Twentieth Century Fox label with no inscription is present. Accompanied by a copy of the film.
A gold-tone fancy link chain necklace terminating in drop-shaped openwork filigree terminals, done using Joseff of Hollywood’s signature Russian plating technique. Joseff designed this necklace to be worn on its own or paired with multiple strands for a more dramatic effect. Rita Hayworth was photographed during a photoshoot demonstrating the multi-strand effect of the necklace. Judy Garland was also photographed modeling the single-strand version of this necklace, and the image was used on the cover of her 1951 albumJudy at the Palace: Judy Garland Singing Songs She Made Famous.

A metal U.S. Marshal badge from the production of Richard Donner’s 1994 film adaptation of Maverick(Donner/Shuler-Donner Productions, 1994) starring Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, in which Garner plays U.S. Marshal "Zane Cooper." Garner wears this badge, or an identically styled one, in the film and on its original theatrical one sheet poster. The metal features a traditional Western-style law enforcement star chained to a name tag reading "Zane Cooper" and an eagle and has two pins on its back. The item comes, as stored by Garner, in a black velvet Tiffany & Co. box.

"A working first draft of the screenplay for the cult classic film Showgirls (Carolco Pictures, 1995), signed by screenwriter Joe Eszterhas. This document was used by Eszterhas and director Paul Verhoeven when they met in Maui, HI to discuss the screenplay, and includes edits and annotations contributed by both, hand-written by Eszterhas.
Showgirls marked the highly anticipated reunion of the collaborators after the overwhelming success of Basic Instinct (Carolco Pictures, 1992), their erotic thriller blockbuster. With a final budget in the range of $40 million, it would become the first NC-17 rated film released by a major studio (United Artists).
Upon its highly hyped theatrical release, it became a pop culture punchline, critical pariah, and notorious box office flop. However, in the decades since, the film’s reputation has grown by leaps and bounds. It has inspired countless midnight showings, two documentaries, and a body of academic criticism.
While fans initially reclaimed the film as a “so bad it’s good” camp classic, more recent criticism has taken it more seriously as effective satire and cultural critique, consistent with previous projects by the filmmakers."
