Coronavirus: Wisconsin permitting teens to get driver’s license without road test

Obtaining a driver’s license just got easier for teens in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles said Tuesday it is waiving road test requirements for new drivers due to the coronavirus pandemic., WISN-TV reported.

In a tweet, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said beginning Monday, families will have the option of waiving road tests for 16- and 17-year-olds who have successfully completed all driver training requirements. Successful candidates will receive a probationary driver’s license.

The Wisconsin DOT tweeted that in the past, 98% of 16-17-year olds pass their road test on the first or second attempt.

According to the second of the two pilot programs announced by the DOT, eligible persons with a Wisconsin driver’s license will be able to renew it online.

“The Division of Motor Vehicles has been at the forefront of making changes to protect the public and our associates during the public health emergency, while continuing to provide vital public services,” Secretary-designee Craig Thompson said in a statement. “These pilot programs represent innovative solutions to help Wisconsin address challenges created by the pandemic.”

Nearly 80,000 people whose licenses have expired received an extension to renew, WJDT reported. Late fees will be waived; the extensions will expire July 25, the television station reported.
