One of Dr. Paul Carey’s employees called 911 Wednesday afternoon after she said she saw the dentist holding a handgun at a dental office at 4 Riviera Drive in Massapequa, police said. Authorities arrested Carey, 62, and took him to a hospital for evaluation, according to officials.

During a subsequent search of his basement home office, authorities said they found 20 illegal long guns – 18 of which were ghost guns without serial numbers – and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition. Officials also found seven silencers and 61 high-capacity magazines, investigators said.

The discovery was made about a decade after authorities revoked Carey’s pistol license following an arrest in 2012, according to officials. Carey had been charged with reckless endangerment after authorities said he fired shots in his backyard, WABC-TV reported.

Police said Carey got the ghost guns discovered Wednesday through the mail and assembled them in his home.

Authorities charged the dentist with one count of first-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
