COVID-19 has caused a shortage of many different items over the last year. The latest is a shortage of Garden Gnomes! Yep, the funny little Travelocity humanoid that sits in your garden. It is supposed to bring good luck and originally was thought to provide protection of buried treasure and minerals in the ground. The supply chain of the gnomes and the items that they are made out of (plastic, ceramic, etc.) has been disrupted. We can’t blame COVID-19 completely. Remember the ship that was stuck in the Suez Canal? That caused further disruption. Plus, more people are at home and gardening more, so the popularity of the garden gnome has skyrocketed.

According to Ian Byrne, assistant manager of Highfield Garden World, “There aren’t any [gnomes]. There’s definitely a shortage. It’s a combined thing with garden centers being so busy, I looked at some figures based on March which said garden centers were 97% busier than they were in 2019.”

Good luck finding a garden gnome for the foreseeable future. You’ll have to find a different way to bring luck and protect your garden!
