The 23-year-old, who has not been identified, shot his brother in the basement of a home in Troy and then went upstairs and shot his 62-year-old father upstairs, the Troy Police Department said in a news release.

“The father heard the shots, came out of his room, was confronted by the other son and was shot twice,” Troy police Capt. Josh Jones told WDIV-TV.

Police received a 911 call from the assailant’s father at about 12:23 a.m. EST, the television station reported. A second call was received at the same time about a vehicle that had crashed into a tree, WJBK-TV reported.

When police found the vehicle, they discovered that the family dog was fatally shot in the back seat, the news release stated. The 23-year-old man believed to be the shooter was also found dead in the vehicle’s back seat, MLive.com reported.

Investigators believe a single handgun was used in each shooting, and it was recovered in the crashed vehicle.

The father of the suspect remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition, according to the Troy police report.

A 64-year-old woman at the home at the time of the shooting was not injured, police said in the news release.

Police have not found a motive for the shootings.

“It’s brutal,” Jones told WJBK. “It’s a devastating incident for the community, obviously for that family.”
