Latarsha Sanders, 48, of Brockton, received two mandatory life sentences without parole after her conviction for first-degree murder in the February 2018 deaths of Edson Brito, 8, and La’son Brito, WFXT-TV reported.

Plymouth District Court Judge William Sullivan ordered Sanders to serve the sentences concurrently, according to the television station. She will also serve nine to 10 years in state prison, to run concurrently, on a charge of witness intimidation.

“Hopefully this is some form of justice for the dad of the little boys and the family,” Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz said after the hearing, according to The Associated Press.

Prosecutors said that Sanders was following a ritual when she fatally stabbed her sons, WFXT reported.

Edson Brito was stabbed 50 times, and Sanders placed the bodies of her sons in separate beds and covered them with sheets, according to the television station.

Sanders also mopped up the floor at the crime scene, WFXT reported. Massachusetts State Police later located a kitchen knife left in the sink that was determined to be the murder weapon.

According to court documents, Sanders said she killed her sons “because of the voodoo stuff.”

She did not elaborate.

“These two young boys were innocent babies with their lives ahead of them,” Cruz said. “This was an emotional and difficult case for all of the family members involved. There were no winners in the courtroom today.”

Sanders has the right to appeal.

Defense attorneys argued that Sanders was not mentally competent at the time of the killings, the AP reported.

“The family has been totally and completely supportive of Miss Sanders because they have recognized from Day One that she was insane at the time that she killed her two children,” Elliot Levine said in court.
