In a news release, the Fullerton Police Department on Friday confirmed that Venissa Maldonado, 25, was arrested for attempted murder and felony child abuse. The baby was found abandoned in a trash can in the woman’s bathroom on Thursday.

Police said that officers were called just after 3:30 p.m. and once they arrived, they found a newborn baby. Officers began to perform lifesaving measures. Members of the Fullerton Fire Department transported the baby to the hospital.

As of Thursday night, the baby is in critical but stable condition, KTLA reported.

Police identified Maldonado through their investigation, which included surveillance footage and vehicle information that possibly belonged to the suspect, authorities said. A search warrant was obtained and served just before 2 a.m. Friday.

It is unclear if the baby was born in the gas station’s bathroom, the news outlet said.
