Former President Jimmy Carter Celebrates 100th Birthday
PLAINS, Ga. — Former peanut farmer and 39th President of the United States Jimmy Carter has celebrated his 100th birthday.
The former President achieved the milestone Tuesday, despite experiencing cancer and other health concerns in recent years, as well as time in hospice care. His wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, also died last year.
While some Americans do not remember Carter’s time in the Oval Office as being particularly beneficial for the nation, few have been able to criticize him as a human being.
The man is known for his humanitarian efforts – for which he won a Nobel Peace Prize, among other awards – and acts of community service, his continued presence at voting booths, and his longstanding Christian faith.
He celebrated in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, by enjoying cupcakes, watching vintage planes fly in his honor, and more. That same day, there was a naturalization ceremony for new U.S. citizens.
In a video, current President Joe Biden called the U.S. Naval Academy graduate “a moral force for our nation in the world.”
Carter served one term as President from 1977 to 1981. Prior to that, he served as the Governor of Georgia.
