Brunch on a Budget: My $25 Houston Restaurant Weeks Stop at State Fare
Houston Restaurant Weeks is my Super Bowl of eating, and this Sunday, I kicked it off at State Fare for their $25 brunch and wow, did it deliver.
The Vibe
State Fare is the definition of easy Sunday energy, buzzy without being chaotic. Think: upbeat playlists, friendly servers who actually want to talk food, and portions that say “you will not leave hungry.” It’s approachable, a little indulgent, and very Houston.
The Deal
For HRW, brunch is $25 and includes a multi-course setup (hello, value). It’s a smart way to try some of State Fare’s greatest hits without blowing the weekend budget and bonus, HRW meals support the Houston Food Bank, so you feel good while you feast.
What I Ordered
- Appetizer #1: Avocado & Street Corn Toast topped with crema and Tajín — 9/10
It was bright, fresh, and a little zesty. I’d 100% order this again.
- Appetizer #2: Deviled Eggs topped with smoked bacon and a chicharrón — 9/10
A rich, salty bite with just the right amount of crunch. Brunch MVP status.
- Main Course: Birria Benedict set on a jalapeño cornbread waffle with pickled onions and cilantro — 7/10
The flavor was on point, savory and satisfying, but the cornbread waffle couldn’t hold up and got a bit mushy by the end. Still worth trying, especially if you’re team birria anything.
What I Loved
- Balanced choices: Options for the sweet-tooth crowd and the savory loyalists. You can do “treat-yourself” without needing a nap by 2 p.m.
- Big, shareable plates: Perfect if you’re a “let’s try a few things” person.
- Cocktail game strong: Brunch classics are well-made and not overly sweet.
- Service with personality: Quick turns, on-point recs, and zero attitude about swapping sides.
Pro Tips
- Book a res if you’re going prime time. HRW crowds show up.
- Go halfsies with your table: one savory, one sweet, and split.
- Ask about add-ons: A small upgrade can turn a good plate into a great one.
- Pace yourself: Portions are generous, save room for course two.
Final Take
For $25, State Fare’s HRW brunch is a no-brainer: big flavors, generous plates, and a feel-good cause. It’s the kind of spot you recommend to friends with confidence because there’s something for everyone and it feels like a little celebration without the splurge.
Overall Rating: 9/10
