Portable Toilet Mishap: Dropped Mountain Dew

The unusual rescue was not a routine call for the fire department, who had never encountered anything like it before.

Kansas City firefighters recently responded to one of the strangest rescue calls imaginable after a man somehow became trapped inside the holding tank of a portable toilet while trying to recover a bottle of Mountain Dew.

The company started a TikTok page JUST to report the facts. WARNING – this is DISGUSTING.

According to the Kansas City Fire Department, crews were dispatched after employees with Patriot Portable Restrooms discovered someone inside one of their portable toilets following a World Cup watch party in the city’s historic 18th & Vine District.

The bizarre ordeal began when a driver arrived to collect the portable restrooms. After knocking on a locked unit, someone inside answered that it was occupied. The driver told the occupant he had about 10 minutes before the restroom needed to be moved.

When he returned, the man still hadn’t come out.

Even stranger, the man told the driver he couldn’t reach the door because he was trapped.

A passing motorcycle police officer stopped to help. When the officer and the restroom employee opened the door, they were stunned to find… nobody.

At least at first.

Moments later, a head suddenly emerged from inside the toilet tank.

Firefighters were called to the scene and attempted to convince the man to climb out on his own, but he was unable or unwilling to do so. Crews ultimately cut a large opening into the side of the portable restroom, allowing the man to crawl to safety before immediately giving him a much-needed rinse with a fire hose.

Kansas City Fire Battalion Chief Riley Nolan admitted it wasn’t exactly a routine rescue.

“Obviously, it’s not something we see every day.”

So why was he in there?

According to Patriot Portable Restrooms, the man later explained he had dropped a Mountain Dew bottle into the toilet the night before and climbed inside to retrieve it.

The company estimates the damaged portable restroom will cost about $800 to replace.

Even after six years in the portable restroom business, company representatives said they had never encountered anything quite like it.

“When we opened the door and didn’t see anybody, we honestly thought we were talking to a ghost,” a company representative joked. “Then his head popped up out of the tank like a game of Whac-A-Mole… or Oscar the Grouch.”

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the unusual rescue ended with everyone safely out of the portable toilet—though perhaps with a story they’ll never live down.
