Stopping for a drink did more than quench a North Carolina man’s thirst. It made him much richer.
Daniel Costner, of Taylorsville, decided to buy a new lottery game and bought a $30 Fabulous Fortune ticket. Suddenly, he realized he was the first winner of the game’s $100,000 prize.
“I was stunned,” Costner told lottery officials in a statement. “I had to sit there and look at it for a few minutes.”
Fabulous Fortune debuted in North Carolina this month, according to North Carolina Education Lottery officials. The game offers six $3 million prizes and 18 prizes of $100,000, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported.
Costner bought his winning ticket at the Market Basket in Taylorsville.
“I had to get another set of eyes to look at it to make sure I was seeing correctly,” Costner said in a statement.
After state and federal withholding taxes, Costner walked away with $71,019.
