Mother and son face up to 12 years in prison for road-rage incident
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – A Pennsylvania woman and her adult son could spend more than a decade in prison for their involvement in a road-rage incident.
Donna Sherbin, 69, and her 30-year-old son, Charles Sherbin, were convicted last month of aggravated assault and related charges. The conviction came nearly four years after the two followed and shot at another person.
According to The Citizens’ Voice newspaper, during an October 2016 road rage incident, Donna Sherbin began driving behind Harry Sager, who was on his way home from a grocery store.
Authorities said Sager pulled over during the situation to let the Sherbins pass, and they sped away.
“I was thinking they wanted to get by me,” Sager said.
At a certain point, the mother and her son, who was riding in the passenger seat, started following Sager’s vehicle again.
When they arrived at a mechanic shop owned by Sager, Charles Sherbin started shooting, officials said.
One of the bullets hit the driver’s side of Sager’s vehicle.
“The passenger shot across the driver’s face and shot their own window out trying to shoot me,” Sager said.
The Sherbins fled the scene.
Sager said he called police and followed the Sherbins at a safe distance so that he could provide a description of the family vehicle, their license plate and their location.
“I was afraid they would get away. That’s why I followed them,” Sager told Citizen’s Voice.
Police said Charles Sherbin shot out the back window of his mother’s car while shooting at a trailing Sager.
Officials who arrived on the scene found two handguns and shell casings inside Donna Sherbin’s vehicle.
When questioned by police, Charles Sherbin said he “wanted to empty the entire clip into the guy’s head.”
“I’d do it again. I’d kill that man,” Sherbin said after his arrest, according to police.
On Friday, Luzerne County President Judge Michael T. Vough sentenced the Sherbins to serve from 18 months to 12 years in prison.
“The type of violent conduct that happened in this case cannot be tolerated,” Assistant District Attorney Jill Sosnoski said after the sentencing. “The outcome of this shooting could have been far more tragic and fortunately, it was not. We were pleased with the jury’s verdict, and after nearly four years, we are happy to finally have closure to this incident.”
