ATHENS, Ala. – The owner of an Alabama gas station is accused of chasing and shooting at a customer he believed was stealing gas, authorities said.

Phillip Wayne Stewart, 64, was charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle, according to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office. He was released from the Limestone County Jail on Sunday after posting $60,000 bail, WHNT reported.

Deputies responded to a call at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday involving a vehicle pursuit, reported. According to deputies, the driver of the pursuing vehicle was ramming the other vehicle and firing shots, the website reported.

The victim told police the other driver had chased him from the S&Z Grocery, WHNT reported. The victim’s car had rear-end damage and a bullet hole in its tailgate, the television station reported.

Deputies went to the store and said they found Stewart’s car with front-end damage and a 9 mm handgun, WHNT reported. Deputies matched the bullets with the one in the victim’s tailgate, the television station reported.

According to deputies, Stewart confessed to ramming and shooting at the vehicle, reported.
