HOUSTON — The coldest temperatures of the year so far are expected to hit Houston as soon as Saturday, as an arctic front hits much of the U.S. Daily high temperatures could get as low as 35ºF and daily lows as low as 27ºF, according to The Weather Channel.

Nights where the temperature drops to 28ºF or lower can create potential “hard freeze” situations. A “hard freeze” is when the temperature remains at or below 28ºF for an hour or more, creating dangerous conditions for plant life, pets and people exposed to the elements for extended period of time.

In addition to the frigid temperatures, the current forecasts are calling for potential snow showers. As of Wednesday afternoon, next Tuesday is showing a 63% chance of snow, mixed with rain and sleet. This could create especially hazardous road conditions, as ice and snow buildup on the streets and highways could make travel very dangerous.

While the upcoming forecast is bleak as far as temperatures are concerned, temperatures are expected to climb back into the 50s and 60s by the following weekend, giving the Houston area a bit of relief from the cold start to 2025.
