A Slovak fugitive who had been on the run for 16 years was arrested after traveling to Milan to support his national ice hockey team at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, Italian police said.

The 44-year-old man, whose name was not released, had been wanted by Italian authorities for a series of thefts committed in 2010.

According to the carabinieri — Italy’s military police — the man was tracked down Wednesday after checking into a campsite on the outskirts of Milan. An automatic alert from the campsite reception flagged his presence.

Authorities arrested him shortly after.

The fugitive was taken to Milan’s San Vittore prison to serve a pending sentence of 11 months and 7 days.

He did not make it to the opening hockey game, where Slovakia defeated Finland 4-1 at Milan’s Santagiulia Arena.
